I will always try to start with having a chat with new students and addressing areas of concern in Biology they may have. I will also generally chat to them and find out how they have found Biology so far, areas of interests or dislikes, how they are taught in schools, have they been getting much past exam practice and so on. From then it will create a good base to look at their syllabus and create some form of plan together whilst also emphasising that work will need to be put in outside of the tutoring sessions in order to truly see good results.
I will also find out from students if they have preferred learning techniques, what they find engaging and boring and try to tailor sessions to individual students.
From both my degrees I have become competent and confident in creating engaging PowerPoints to deliver material in fun and engaging ways. I will always incorporate past questions as ultimately past question practice is golden especially for a science based subject. As I found from my own A-level and GCSE experience, exam technique is really important and even if you know the content, you must master the exam technique to truly perform well.
I also found that throughout my own studies and tutoring my brothers in science, spaced repetition and active recall are undoubtedly the most effective methods in retaining information and so I will also always try to incorporate this into sessions whether that be through generally me asking questions, creating flash card decks for the students and so on.
