I have experience of 3 years in studying biology.
In my lessons I will have a structured way of teaching each sub topic- first teaching the content to a high standard then doing exam questions to test the knowledge.
At the beginning of each lesson I will ask my students to recall everything they have remembered from the previous lesson (blurting) as I find this a very effective way of remembering content
