I adapt lessons to the ability and preference of the primary aged student. While adhering to the requirements of the English National Curriculum, I strive to make lessons fun and learning enjoyable. I have worked with children who are school refusers, those on the spectrum, those who dislike a classroom environment and those who have simply disengaged for a variety of reasons. I find it best to build a rapport with students before we embark on some learning. I like get to know them, find out what their interests are so I can tailor learning to suit them, to engage them and garner their willingness to work.
I have a specialism in Environmental and Experiential Education meaning I can use place-based learning and what is available at the time to integrate into lessons. I live on the edge of the English Lake District and the area is rich with resources for learning. I like using these to embed understanding for students, whether that be seasonal fruits and vegetables, leaves from the trees, colours we can see at different times of the year, animals habits and life cycles. We could look around the area for shapes in buildings, explore angles, corners and numbers. We can write stories or poetry based on things you feel or what you can see from your window. We can plant a seed and record the changes in growth each week. We can visit the horses in the field opposite, the cows on the corner or the sheep in the allotment. While we work online we can explore the outdoors for topics linked to Science, Geography, English, Maths or History.
If we work indoors we can look at all types of resources to help with our understanding. Do you enjoy art as a form of self expression? I have a background in design so we can draw together and I can share tips and techniques to help you achieve work you are proud of. If History is your area of interest there is lots we can explore together, depending on your year group, from the Stone Age to Queen Elizabeth II. We could bake a cake and you could help me measure the ingredients and while it bakes we can make a topping and talk about what you would like to do in the next lesson. We can listen to music, discuss what we hear and the differences in genres. Depending on your age, you can do research online with an adult at home and we can discuss what you have learned.
If you want to sit and work from books and a whiteboard online, we can take a deep dive into subjects for better understanding. If you are concerned about SATs we can look at past papers and work through answers.
