I prefer to start with some pronunciation practices and mediation. This is useful to gather new information and touch upon simple grammar. For me, it's all about communication and getting your point across. If not necessary, I avoid digging deep into grammar. Nevertheless, I utilize useful methods such as syntax analysis and constituent replacement — sounds difficult? Check this:
Sarah was travelling by bus. Sarah (subject) was travelling (verb) + by bus (adverbial of manner). Now substitute the last constituent by other means of transportation. How many sentences can you build?
