Jamie Sue

I am a dedicated scholar-practitioner, constantly updating my teacher toolbox with ways to improve my outreach and impact on students. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the theories of experiential learning, transformative learning, personal investment, and the tenets of pedagogy and andragogy. Research by such masterminds as John Dewey, Abraham Maslow, Jack Mezirow, Jean Piaget, and Lev Vygotsky guides my studies and serves as foundational literature to support the science of service learning. I have taught Spanish as a foreign language for 18 years. I have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and a Master's degree in Teaching with a focus on Second Language Acquisition. I have also led study abroad programs for over 10 years. My favorite part of studying a foreign language is actually using it to communicate with people around the world. My lessons are centered around holistic learning methodologies, integrating a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs into learning activities. Critical thinking skills are emphasized, and perspective transformation is essential in studying a new culture. My lessons begin with any necessary review, an overview of new content, a presentation with explanation, practice time, a review of the new material as needed, and additional practice. We will be drawing during our lessons because I believe graphic organizers and visuals help tremendously with comprehension and assist in recall. As my student, you and I are a team, and we will collaborate on activities. I will listen to your needs and concerns and personally create lessons to best suit you.
