James in a nutshell
I have taught maths GCSE since I was 15 years old, initially to my sister who had failed 5 times and my girlfriend who had failed twice - both passed!! During a 22-year career in the Royal Navy I also taught approximately 30 military personnel who had originally failed at school but who now needed to pass in order to get promoted; some of them had not done maths for 20 years! All my students passed with the exception of one person who did not attend the final exam.

I work face-to-face and/or online. Initially I will assess your abilities and then tailor my approach to your needs and the needs of the syllabus your exams are based upon. This may involve going right back to number lines, multiplication and division, but time spent here pays off in the long run. I do expect students to be motivated and to engage fully in the teaching sessions and to complete approximately 3 hours of additional work each week. This will involve consolidating what has been taught each week and completing real GCSE exam questions to build your confidence and ability.

I am also a professional, qualified and experienced coach. Utilising coaching I can help individuals grow their competence through identifying barriers to progress, such as limiting beliefs, and by building greater self-awareness and confidence. I often hear individuals say " I can't do maths". This is one such limiting belief. Nobody is born with an ability to just do maths; everyone has to learn it, and everyone is very capable of learning maths with the right approach.
