Hi, I'm James! I recently graduated from Cambridge University (where I studied Music) - and while I was there, I completed the CEFR C1 accreditation ('effective operational fluency') in Spanish.
I've become fluent in Spanish through examinations and practice – I know what is needed for success in these exams, and I know what it's like learning a language 'by the book'! Each lesson therefore strikes a balance of new content, and engaging, interactive exercises.
The first lesson will be used to understand the student’s current ability, their interests in the subject, and what you’re looking to get out of tutoring. This will help me to adjust the pace and content of lessons to suit the individual. In subsequent lessons, students can then come with specific questions/exercises from their recent studies, which can be covered alongside material I prepare for each lesson.
Lessons will be focused on the final exam (if there is one), but will ensure that the student truly understands the concepts. Students are more likely to succeed if they fully understand a concept, rather than simply memorising an explanation that they don't understand. I like to see a student's attempt at a question or exercise in advance of a session, to fully identify the gap in their understanding. After explaining the concept, the session will then cover similar exercises, in order to consolidate the concept.
Students also learn differently: I try to understand whether a student is a more visual, or more auditory learner. Some students benefit from being recommended online videos (YouTube, etc.) that suit their learning style.
