Whether it is starting from first principles, especially if you intend to set up your own business, or if you simply want some coaching in a particular area of interest, it is best to be guided by the student rather than be fixed, doggedly, to a certain style.
My interest in business comes from time spent not only as an employee of a complex, regulated company but also as the founder of my own small business. Equally important has been my more recent consultancy work, especially with local voluntary organisations where taking the first step (or even knowing where to tread) in a new venture is often daunting. In taking the lead on this sort of project, I have continued to learn new things for myself which can only be beneficial for my ability to help others learn.
During my time in systems management in the pharmaceutical industry, a lot of the work involved talking to people about the work they do, understanding the process, improving the process and then re-educating that same workforce in the new version of the process. This took place at all levels of the company and across nearly every part of the business, where the individual levels of attainment and aptitude could vary wildly - I learnt to be flexible and patient above all else. It is these skills, and more, that you can benefit from too.
