As a teacher, I adapt my lessons according to the ability of my students. Our sessions will always be preplanned (thus efficient) and always have an intricate level of flexibility to ensure that no unforeseen circumstance causes a setback.
A typical lesson would include a brief introduction of the topic followed by an explanation and a few worked-through examples, during which I build up the students' courage and help them master the skill. The lesson would end with me assigning the student a few questions and allowing them to work through them individually so that they feel confident with the topic and can correctly answer similar questions in the future. Post lessons, I keep in contact with the student and make sure that I am present to answer any questions they may have related to the topic. In the next lesson, we will recap the previous topic before moving on.
Through this method, I am not only able to banish the child's fear of maths but help them develop a method of question-solving that they can apply in other situations. By breaking down the topics into smaller (and easier) chunks of work, I can help the student be aware of potential traps hence helping them find it easier to maneuver through the question. By recalling past learning, the student can transfer their new knowledge to their long-term memory, hence making it easier to remember and recall in the future. I create a safe learning environment to improve the child's mathematical skills, so they may be able to ace their exams.
