I have worked with a tutoring company in the past and worked with high achieving students as well as those who needed the extra boost to reach their full potential. Online my lessons take many forms and I primarily use power points and presentations I develop myself to best suit the student. Each week I try to make the lessons different for example if I teach English, on top of the curriculum I create based on the exam board the student’s school is using, I’ll direct them to extra recourses and sometimes perhaps extra reading for school or recreational purposes. I tend to test the student’s understanding every month on the topic we have been focusing on or as a break on a particularly difficult topic I’ll do a lesson where we recap past topics with 10-20 miscellaneous questions to improve their recall and long term retention. Over the first few weeks whilst I acclimate to a student’s learning style I’ll use videos, reading resources and even take on a more oral approach to best assess how the student learns. I’m always on call to respond outside of tutoring hours on homework questions both assigned by me or by their school. I will also tend to check in on the student’s mental health and how they are handling the work and how they are balancing the different aspects to ensure I am not giving them too much as I understand how it feels to be a student and the importance of balance.
