I would use a powerpoint-type resource for the information and then I would go through some worksheets with the student in order to test their understanding of the topic that we had been speaking about. I sat the 11+ 5 years ago and am passionate about helping people in that field as it is crucial to help them get into a school where they could develop a better understanding and passion for education and potentially receive better grades at GCSE. I love teaching Maths to people as it reinforces my understanding of the topics and allows me to interest other people in these topics. Also, I may set occasional homeworks if it helps the student to get a deeper understanding of the topic that we were studying in the session.
I find powerpoints really valuable as I could e-mail them to the student or the family of the student if it is necessary and they can be used multiple times for different students studying the same topic. I would like to help people for a lower price than more established tutors to allow more people to have access to a private tutor so that everyone has a greater chance to achieve the sought grades at either GCSE level or at a lower level such as 11+ level.
I had a tutor while I was studying for the 11+ who taught everything in a way I was unable to understand at the time as it was not appropriate for me but I will try to teach in a way that the student will understand so that they can compartmentalise that and perform better.
