I bring a sense of enthusiasm to my lessons and like to help students to be curious and genuinely want to ask questions about the texts they are studying. The content of my lessons is tailored to the specific areas the student struggles with, whether this is picking out literary techniques in a text, writing coherent essays and paragraphs according to the GCSE or A-level expectations, finding extra material (e.g. critics to quote in A-level essays), writing within a time limit, or simply help with organising a study schedule. The lessons will start with me answering any questions the student has from the previous session’s work, then we will work through some example questions together on the area they are struggling with. If the student would like, I can provide guidance for A-level coursework. It has often been said that there are “no right or wrong answers" in English, which can make the subject difficult to navigate for some students who prefer a clear, definite answer (as in science or maths). As a result, I like to simplify the example questions as much as possible so it is clear to students what they are being asked to find and discuss in their answers, whilst keeping the conversation open to anything that interests the student about the text. I studied English literature and language at A-level so I am very well-practiced in closely analysing a text for writers’ techniques (as in vocabulary and structure). I will also find extra wider reading materials for A-level students to help them develop their responses to literature questions. As a student of literature at UCL (ranked 8th globally on the QS university table), I have achieved a first grade in every assignment so far - I can help students to develop insightful comments in cohesive written responses to questions they might face in exams.
