When it comes to lessons, I prefer to explain a concept on a theoretical level before then applying it to the real world. This way, students learn how to write code - in any language - rather than just how to copy and paste. I find that illustrations and diagrams are one of the best ways to explain the trickier concepts, showing you how something works will almost always be more helpful than just describing it!
