As someone whose background of study is in the field of Education (BA Hons Education: Primary and Early Years), I have been fortunate enough to acquire a significant amount of pedagogical knowledge over the course of my three-year degree and beyond.
At the heart of my approach to teaching is the firm belief that learning is not a 'one-size-fits-all'; All students have differing learning needs, so it's important to understand that one way of learning may not suit everyone. To overcome this I ensure that each of my lessons are tailored to the individual, and if it is a lesson with more than one student, I will always ensure to incorporate differentiation - it is key to a successful lesson.
Something that has always been at the forefront of my mind when teaching is certifying an environment that is relaxed, informal and non-hierarchical. This is because I would like to create a space whereby every person within the session are able to feel comfortable enough to speak up, make suggestions and ask questions without the fear of overstepping the line. I seldom experienced this from teachers when I was learning, which is why I place such a great importance on it.
I encourage autonomy over ones learning. Developing a deeper understanding of the subject and having a sense of excitement when attending our sessions is the main goal. Learning should be enjoyable! I know how stressful exams can be - believe me when I say I have been in your shoes! That is why I take a calm and gentle approach to tutoring; my goal is that you feel comfortable and to not feel pressured to get it right every time. Mistakes are inevitable - it's totally okay to make them and it means I get to teach you something!
I find that when students are reminded of their achievements, their engagement sky-rockets and it creates a truly positive learning environment. :-)
