I am a final year Maths student at a UK university, I am interested in tutoring Maths and French GCSE students (Year 10 & Year 11). Having tutored GCSE students before I am aware of the course structure and content and I am comfortable teaching students and increasing their understanding. I have many resources to support my teaching in order to provide an excellent level of teaching. I tutored 3 students between the ages of 7 to 14 for 2 years whilst also studying for my GCSEs, this was a really enjoyable and interesting experience. I have always been enthusiastic about learning and I'm always looking for opportunities to excel academically whilst also searching for a part-time job. Tutoring has been second nature to me as it allows me to help younger children broaden their knowledge which I feel is a privilege to do. I tutored a student who was a year below me and this really enlightened my teaching methods as essentially I was recapping the content and teaching it at the same time. I explained how I would use or memorise the particular concepts during exams or revision and so I eliminated unproductive steps during revision which enabled the student to advance quickly through her revision. I believe I have grasped my teaching methods quite well but also I have discovered niche techniques that I feel would be appreciated by students and would be effective in their education. I have also sat the new style of GCSE (1-9 grading system) hence I understand the mark scheme and the layout of the questions which I believe would make it easier as tutors to help students earn the extra marks. By providing 1:1 tutoring sessions I can cater specifically to the students' needs and concentrate on areas of concern. My approach to teaching students Maths would be, I ask the student which topic are they struggling with where I will then give an example of a question and allow them to follow through with my method. Then I will provide some more questions which they can work on independently and if they are having difficulties I would prompt them in the right direction. This allows them to continue engaging and thinking of their own answers which they would find beneficial in other situations too but I would help them and make sure they are confident with how they found their solution. Depending on the students' abilities I would be happy to set extra work where they can practice questions in their own time. However, if they feel that they are struggling to balance school as well as tuition I am happy for them to complete the work I have prepared during these tutoring hours. I have studied French at A - level therefore I am passionate to teach this subject too. In terms of teaching students French I would once again ask which topics they are struggling for example if it is grammar then we would go through the content and understand how to use the grammar correctly then I would ask them to complete exercises for example conjugate the verb in the correct tense according to this sentence. This is one way they can use grammar from a slightly different perspective. Once again I have multiple books and websites which I have used myself that have allowed me to achieve top grades therefore I would like to share them with my students.
