Between 2017 and 2022, I gained five years of experience in one-to-one mathematics tutoring across GCSE and A level. Of the seven students I have tutored, each of the seven improved at least one grade classification. I ran bespoke programmes developed alongside teachers, students and parents as well as teaching the WJEC and AQA GCSE syllabus.
Between 2018 and 2022, I tutored a group of 3 students at secondary level English language. In this capacity, I worked alongside the class teacher, running ‘top-up’ session to complement class work and improve confidence.
Additionally, I have over one years of experience in helping students prepare for the 11+ school entrance exam and over 3 years of experience in Oxbridge entry coaching. I offer unlimited help across personal statements, admission tests, and interview preparation. Of the four students (2x History, English, and PPE) I have worked with, all were invited to interview and two received offers.
In terms of my approach, this is, of course, contingent on each student, and how they prefer to learn. I look to work closely with students, parents and class teachers to develop a tailored and specific tutoring programme. However, in my experience, students respond best to highly focused, in depth, and relatively short (30-60 minute) sessions with clear objectives. I look to take a particular issue/small number of related issues and focus particularly on this subject in each session. This way, students learn, practice and master at least one subject/issue per session. These measurable, attainable, and, crucially, tangible improvements invest in students’ confidence and enjoyment, maintaining a fast rate of improvement.
