My teaching approach is often conversational, in order to help my students really engage in the lessons and to help ensure that they leave the lessons having learned something new and made some progress. I encourage them to ask questions whenever something is not clear; no questions are daft! My lessons often include fast-paced games/exercises that help students improve their aural skills (i.e chord and rhythm recognition) so that if they wish to learn songs by themselves, they can do so by ear, or as well as using tablature and notation. While my teaching style is often conversational, I can easily adapt to students who are more shy/less talkative. I can also provide extra tuition materials for students at no extra cost, if I or the student believe it will aid their progress and understanding of the given work. I am also more than happy to review my students’ progress between lessons; if a student has completed their homework for the week, I will encourage them to push themselves and try something harder until the next lesson.
I have a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music (BA Hons) and in my day-to-day guitar work, I play styles such as Pop, Rock, Funk, Blues and Metal.
During a typical lesson, we will do some warm-up exercises, review homework, and learn something new related to what we did each previous week. I write every students’ homework down, so that week on week they can see what they eventually have to perfect.
