I have 4 years tutoring, from 11+ exams all the way to A-Level. I also have experience as a maths teaching assistant, and helping with a learning difficulties spelling club. I pride myself on my patience with all students, and staying adaptable to meet their needs.
I tailor my lesson plans for each student. For any new student, I ask for either a list of topics they are struggling with, or the teacher’s schedule of topics for the year. This allows me to introduce the student to topics before they come up in class. I find that familiarising yourself with the topics allows you go engage more in class, and ask better questions, thus getting more out of the student’s school lessons as-well as the tutoring sessions.
Each tutoring sessions will start with a prepared power point about the topic, to cover the basics, questions are, of course, encouraged. Then we go onto worked solutions, where I solve a problem with them, going through and explaining each step of the process. Finally, the most important part, the student goes on to attempt some questions individually. I find that just knowing that I am there to help if they get stuck boosts the students confidence in their ability immensely. The time spent in each phase of the lesson is adaptable to the students learning pace. If they are particularly struggling I may stretch the topic out to another session, or if they are speeding ahead I always have extension questions on hand to stretch them further.
