Hugh Cuppage

I am a friendly and supportive teacher, with a broad knowledge of historical periods and historical questions. I will tailor my content to the topics being covered by the student in his or her school classes, with a particular focus on British history, early modern history, and Chinese history. In terms of a lesson plan, I will get the student to tell me what topics they are studying and what essay questions they are being asked to answer. I will then teach them how to make effective notes on the subject, how to analyze the relevant information, and then how to give a well-planned and thought-out answer to the question. I will also teach them effective research skills and the ability to analyze and understand historical sources. In terms of essay writing and planning, I will show them how to analyze essay questions, plan answers effectively, understand the effective use of sources, present effective arguments and counterarguments, and write clearly and well. I may even be able to show them how to engage with wider philosophical questions of facts, interpretation and the scholarship relating to the period in question in order to get the highest mark possible. In terms of my experience, I have a History BA from Durham as well as a Masters in Political Science from the LSE. I have tutored students in history writing between the ages of 13-17, and I have helped assess university applications to study history at Oxford University.
