I am an Early Childhood educator who loves to help the students grow and build the basics that they need as they continue their education. I use a lot of different methods to work with students. For reading I follow the Balanced Literacy and Orton-Gillingham methods to work with students. For math I use a lot of different methods to reach the students where they are at. I believe in reaching the students where they are at so they can have a stable base that they need to build on. If that means I have to take a 2nd grade student back to Kindergarten to help them understand the basics I will. I have in the past been able to take a student that was in 2nd grade but performing on a preschool level and after 6 months of tutoring he then tested at the end of first grade, so we made almost two years advance, we worked hard and when we would hit a road block we worked until we were able to pass those road blocks and were ready to move on. I believe that all students are capable of learning you just have to figure out where they are at and reach them on their level. In reading I also believe in working with phonemic awareness and will start each lesson with phonemic awareness activities. If a student builds the basics in phonemic awareness and phonics they can then take that knowledge to build both reading and writing. I add both reading and writing in each and every lesson to increase these skills. If you have a strong base in the areas of math and reading, other subjects such as science and social studies/history will become easier as time goes. In math I also like to integrate a lot of project based learning where we take real life skills and create projects using them, such as designing your own garden and even running your own restaurant.
