Henry Perks

I am an energetic, dynamic and engaging English with over four years of experience teaching in Japan. The majority of my experience is teaching in junior high school classes (12-15), however I have experience teaching students of all ages (3-80s) and of all levels.
My classes focus on communication and encourage students to engage with the target language in a way that is personal to them. For classes of junior high school aged students, I introduce the students to a topic through an easy to understand presentation and a game which allows them to learn the basic phrases the class will focus on. Next, a guided communication activity is completed in pairs, small groups, or as a full class milling activity to consolidate their knowledge of the new language point. Finally, the class culminates in a productive activity in which students create examples of the target language themselves in free expression. A similar format is followed for younger students, with more focus on using the target language correctly in a specific context, rather than applying the language to a wider self-expressional context.
For conversational classes with adult and older teenagers, the focus is on building natural conversations around every day topics. While a similar lesson flow is followed, the conversation classes focus more heavily on just that - conversation. The key skills students should be developing by the end of each class are self-expression and folding the new grammar point or topic specific vocabulary into their English knowledge in a natural conversation context. A successful conversation class would find me as a silent observer in the production portion while students speak together in English.
With one-to-one classes the focus can be adjusted to the areas the student wants to focus on. This can range from working on reading comprehension to academic writing to passing English fluency exams, or anything else. I have experience in helping students to study for TOFEL and ILETS exams, school exams, and editing academic research papers, and English language CVs. For one-to-one classes with school aged children, the focus on playing games and engaging with English in a relaxed yet stimulating and engaging environment. The goal is to show students that English is fun and learning to express themselves naturally can be positive and exciting.
I have a range of materials I have created myself to engage students and lead them to naturally producing English. These materials can be used physically or digitally in online classes. I also work digital materials into all of my classes and use a wide range of online materials for completing this. For online classes, I have access to Zoom and Skype for completing the lessons at the students convenience.
