My approach focuses on equipping students with the awareness of three main areas in your subject: things you are capable of and comfortable with, things you are working towards or find more challenging, and things that you enjoy doing. Laying out these key areas allows both of us to identify what it is we need to focus more of our attention on. An example lesson may take a concept from the 'challenging' list. A beginning exercise will show what level you are at and give us a base to work up or down from. Gaining that position on the ladder is key. Throughout the lesson we can build up from what you know using past exam practice or alternative methods that suit your learning style. Hopefully by the end of the lesson, improvement will have been made so much so that an exercise in role reversal might display your ability to explain what you have learnt back to me. Moving forward from there, students will now be aware of what is possible, and we can set targets for the following lesson based on what we're aiming for. This way, students leave my lesson with something to work on and things they're capable of to fall back on if they run into trouble. In my experience in school, university and learning bass guitar, this method has got the best out of me. I can promise a calm approach; I am not a judgemental person and I only care about helping you find ways to progress and enjoy learning.
