Usually my method when the student is old enough to communicate what they are struggling with is to approach these difficulties with specifically curated questions. When answering these questions students will show what they don’t quite understand through their method of solving said questions. After I have specifically identified where their understanding is lacking I will focus my time there. Once I think that together we have filled the gap in their understanding I will give them work to complete independently which we will go over together to see the progress they have made.
I will tailor the lessons around the students ability always pushing them to stretch their understanding and ability. My aim is also to make the sessions enjoyable as students tend to go further and make more progress when they feel engaged with the subject. To achieve understanding and engagement with the student I use visual aids and non repetitive work to build their understanding.
