I want students to arrive to my lessons excited and not dreading the next hour. In the majority of lessons I use my Apple Pencil and virtual whiteboard to visually aid understanding of the current topics. I also like to use Quizlet at the end to recap previous information from other lessons to improve long term retention for exams. I use personally constructed exam sheets which continually identify ‘ problem’ areas for students and I can them tailor their next lessons accordingly.
Based on each student, the lessons will differ slightly based on the kind of learner they are. Current exams test students with a “ one size fits all “ approach. I like to tailor my classes to each student, ensuring their understanding of basic concepts before moving onto the examiners head and how we get into it to use the knowledge and apply it appropriately to exam questions.
I religiously use the specification of each exam board, this ensures that all the correct knowledge is learnt and applications of this knowledge in certain ways are practiced. Using the specification I also sift through parts of the curriculum that will not be tested in the examination.
The key part of any lesson is my 5 - minute review at the end of each class. This again improves long term memory formation of knowledge previously learnt and allows me to gauge my students understanding of our lesson. This is a time where the student can take a holistic view of the last hour and express any ideas for our future lessons.
