When I tutored Year 7s, we began with a spelling test, where we repeatedly consolidate these words, and clarify their meaning to expand the child’s vocabulary. We then moved on to reading 10 minutes of a book, where I then ask the student questions to ensure their understanding. We would then answer some comprehension questions on a text. After this, we move onto where the student feels they need improvement on, for example, understanding how to use similes or metaphors. I set weekly goals for my students, such as recapping their spelling and vocabulary as well as encouraging them to read more at home. I make sure the environment is open and friendly, so they are comfortable to ask any questions!
