I have been tutoring primarily through GoStudent since June 2023, through which I have taught a number of students aged 8-16. My current students are primarily preparing for National 5 or GCSE exams or needing additional support with literacy skills in lower secondary school. So far, I have helped students increase their engagement with the subject and raise their mock exam results through my one-to-one lessons. I am particularly skilled in literacy, comprehension and essay writing for English, History and Drama. Through experience both as a private tutor and as a facilitator in youth theatre and drama classroom contexts, I am skilled in guiding pupils through areas of weakness in these areas, responding to individual learning styles and identifying gaps in knowledge. I have always been patient and understanding of the difficulties students face in these essay-based subjects, and am able to focus increasing the student’s understanding of useful techniques in order to build their competence in academic writing at the secondary level. Through my training with GoStudent as well as my own experience as a relatively recent school leaver (I completed my sixth year in 2019), I am also familiar with both English and Scottish national curriculum outcomes and AQA and SQA exam board assessment objectives, and am skilled at targeting specific areas to improve test scores. My teaching background is in youth theatre and drama classroom contexts - I was the assistant tutor for the LAMDA Grades 1-5 at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness from and the director of Millburn Academy Drama Club from It was here that I developed my teaching style. My drama background informs my tutoring, as I aim to bring some flair to lessons, while balancing fun with learning!
In a first lesson I would get to know the student, playing some ice-breaker games and establishing the rules of the classroom space, following the "safe space" policy, in which we establish what we expect from each other and establish the boundaries that will allow us to communicate effectively. We would then establish SMART goals, using my knowledge of the curriculum and the student's identified needs to allow the student to see clearly what they are working towards and how they will reach those goals. Using these goals we would work over the period of lessons to focus on individual skills and areas of knowledge, offering different learning methods and working WITH the students to allow the student to discover what works best for them, integrating students' existing interests and skills into the work as much as possible.
