I have loved working as a tutor for the past 5 years. I have experience tutoring Key Stage 2 and 3 English as well as English as a foreign language. My students have ranged from primary and secondary school pupils to adults in full-time work.
In regards to the format of my sessions, I like to start with a warm-up activity which could involve some spellings for my younger students or a vocabulary recap task for those learning English as a foreign language. I like to make the sessions as engaging and interactive as possible, so I often bring fun English-learning games to in-person sessions.
I have lots of experience working through comprehension texts, novels and speeches with my students. Having worked as a journalist and being a former history student, I enjoy teaching lessons in which we analyse newspaper articles and understand historical speeches. I have worked through many novels with my students including Holes and Of Mice and Men, in order to teach literary techniques and the effectiveness of language. I am very happy to plan lessons, but I also offer students the chance to bring any work to me that they might want assistance with.
When teaching English as a foreign language, I like to spend time reading and interpreting texts with my students while also devoting time to practise speaking skills through conversations together. I spent 4 years learning Spanish, so I understand the importance of expanding vocabulary and reinforcing writing, reading and speaking skills.
I believe I am a friendly and approachable tutor, and I most of all love to see my students develop while working with them.
