My experience of teaching English to refugees was by a subject lead approach. So,for example, we might cover a visit to hospital and talk about the different scenarios that such a visit might highlight. This way, vocabulary was increased and basic grammar construction would be addressed.
We also, looked at current affairs either in the newspaper or sometimes on the television. Again,a discussion would evolve and I would also ask students to write short paragraphs about a particular piece of news that interested them . We would then discuss their written work and issues relating to their use of grammar and use of vocabulary would be corrected.
For these students there was no text book and no formal syllabus but I am happy to follow any text book that students have been asked to follow.
