I am new to tutoring but have a history of mentoring and training diverse teams with English as their second language. It is important to know if a student is looking for basic conversational English before moving on to more complex grammer.

I believe in coaching and repetition, while ensuring a feedback system ensures the student has the correct understanding of how, why and when of the English language.

For completely non English speakers, I would start with the rudiments of the English alphabet, phonetic and phonological, (the sounds of a language)

For those looking to improve, discuss their aspirations and shortfalls and target those, again, handling the why, how and when complexities of the language. Enunciation and emphasis form a later part of the structure of the language for more effective communication skills.

Cultural norms form part of how we use the English language and what is deemed acceptable language and behaviours can also be included (from a strictly objective viewpoint of course)
