My lessons are complete without using all the jargon and unnecessarily difficult explanations. I prefer to teach or reiterate the basics of my subject first so that any harder concept can be broken down and tackled step by step. The content of my lessons will be based on the AQA biology specification for both GCSE and A-level to avoid wasting time.
Though I am young, I was known as the teacher of my biology classes despite the fact that all those students had been a highly competent bunch. I have been told I just remember everything as though they are lego bricks that just fit together, which makes coming across new ways of questions being asked in an exam interesting, instead of daunting, to me. Furthermore, as a recent student, I think I understand the perspective of current students well in comparison to some older tutors which means that I will try to incorporate fun games like kahoots, that I might try and play along with!
My lessons will involve careful planning and tailoring to the level of understanding my students have. They will only really need a pen, notebook and calculator, but phones may have to be put away (even I know how distracting they can be).
Resources like practice papers and sheets may need to be provided by the student and that it realistically the only commitment they will need to make, other than turning up on time and letting me know in a timely fashion if they can't attend a particular session.
At the end of the day, tutoring is a two-way street and I don't plan to treat my students like they are ignorant children. I teach in the hopes that both student and tutor learn, as that is the best way to progress. I'll know my job is done when I start intentionally making mistakes in my explanations that will then get corrected by my student.
