I am a Spanish and Portuguese student at the University of Oxford and base my teaching methods on how I learned my languages, achieving an equivalent in A level Portuguese (European Framework) in just over two years. I use Zoom and Teams (whatever is preferred) to teach, and primarily use certified textbooks, native source texts and my own resources for content. I primarily want to foster five key elements in learning a language in my lessons: reading, speaking, listening, writing and grammar. Whilst I believe an understanding of grammar and the fundamentals of the language are important, learning about the culture and lived reality of Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries are essential to immersing oneself in the language.
I primarily use Powerpoint for the conveying of information and screen sharing. The lesson will be centred around a main grammar point (such as learning about the present tense or infinitive), before I will then test the other aspects of the language. I want my lessons to be interactive to optimise the learning potential of the student. Active participation is an essential and the student will complete exercises in the class, and also take away homework to reinforce learning outside of the classroom. I also like to use music, TV programmes and other media to help the student get to grips with the target culture.
I have experience in multiple pastoral environments, having worked as a Women's Officer and customer-facing environments, where training new employees and communication were key for the role and I would love to bring this experience to the tutoring environment.
