Every student has different needs. I pride myself on taking into account a variety of elements in order to provide the best tailored experience to meet these needs, be that: requests of parents, requests of students themselves, the evidence I acquire during our lessons, and comments from their teachers, if available.
I work to elicit answers as often as possible to ensure active participation and then provide work to reinforce and challenge, offering real-time feedback as and when necessary.
In my lessons, I tend to work along with their syllabus- usually with the aid of a short video to establish the topic of the lesson (5-10 mins) which we will dissect and glean questions from that we will then work through using an interactive whiteboard. We will then aim for "mastery" in a topic (generally this means 10 questions in a row without mistakes) before moving on. Sometimes students will ask me why and I like to say "The higher you build a tower the sturdier the foundations need to be" and for the younger ones or those for whom English is not their first language I may outright point out that if you know steps 2-10 of a 10 mark problem but make a mistake on step 1 you might score a 0- so it's always best to be thorough!
Mathematics is immense and that can sometimes seem daunting, but -reliably enough- a Mathematical problem can always be broken down into understandable chunks. Once a student is able to understand this and spot where to apply it, their learning becomes empowered and their confidence and abilities grow- invariably!
