I have been tutoring for almost 3 years, primarily in GCSE Maths, whilst also doing Sciences at GCSE and A Level. I make sure to adapt my lessons to each individual student as everyone learns differently and this approach has put me in the top 5% of tutors on other platforms.
Whilst I make sure to adapt the lesson, I follow a baseline where I spend the first part of the lesson explaining the content that will be covered, before moving on to practice questions. Usually, the student will struggle with these questions at first and will need a lot of help from me. I aim to nudge them in the right direction, making sure the student has a good opportunity to think for themselves. As the lesson continues, the student will usually gain the skills and confidence to solve the questions with less input from me. I tend to make the questions harder as the lesson goes on so I will often need to offer some help but the difference in the student's skill between the start and end of the lesson is highly noticeable.
Whilst teaching, I make sure to check that the student is fully understanding everything. I know from being a student myself that sometimes people will say they understand when they don't fully get it. I aim to make sure this doesn't happen through asking the student how they are finding it and making sure that they can explain what they are doing rather than just knowing what to do and not understanding why.
