I have been involved in all sorts of science and mathematics teaching and learning. What is needed is to first agree with my students on the level and skim of work that is required. I then set up a teaching and learning plan with my students especially with regards to when the students intend to writing their examinations. Once that is decided together we plan and agree on how often we are going to meet in order to complete our plan of work before the students go for their examinations. Finally we plan and agree on the actual times we meet to carry out our teaching and learning activities.
The next important issue concerns learning and teaching materials. Both myself and my students will require the same copies of teaching and learning materials, This is vitally important as we all will need to go over the materials that prescribed for the course they will be doing. It I’d actually easier for us together to go over the course materials and then they go and do exercises on their own.
Instead of me inventing examples for their homework, they simply do the exercises given as examples in the texts. If they find them to be difficult, we do them together.
Of course, there is often a need for me to arrange for specific examples for them to do as specific tests. This may be in some ways include some problems from past examination papers. The more we do such type of test and exercises the better prepared they become for their final examinations.
