I tend to follow the classwork (if appropriate) and reinforce areas of difficulty by demonstrating solutions and then inviting students to approach similar problems until they have mastered the concepts.
In terms of examination preparation past papers are worked through to identify areas that need reinforcing- relevant exercises are then set to allow the individual to gain confidence in addressing this type of problem.
