The peril of the staircase and the guitar amplifier.. being in a band isn't necessarily easy, but the mundane tasks do reward the band member with a sense of belonging and accomplishment. I played in cover bands for years but as I got older and especially when family walked into my life, the logistics of the operation became too demanding.. so hesitantly, I quit.
As now is, I want to offer to others a path of least resistance to the experiences I had.
In the very first lesson, I'd need to find out the desired outcome of the student, and their level of competence.
Then, I may teach some basic theory or style that fits the student's requirements. Or, I can simply show someone how to play their favourite song in a parrot fashion. There really is no correct way, but remember that the deeper the knowledge and understanding, the more expressive and competant one becomes.
Before playing bass, I was a fluent guitar player, and I found that I could apply what is known as the CAGED system to the bass, along with something known as MODES. For the most part though, bass is about rhythm and percussion, and it provides a solid foundation for the band to shine. From Funk to Metal or Indie to Ambient, I hope to steer you in the right direction. I can teach slap bass, fingerstyle, pick style, or a combination. Versitility is key though and one's competence determines their opportunities!
Start your journey on bass with me, Gary.
