The starting point is always to find out where the student is starting from - their level of confidence and proficiency. And then to work from there. It’s always good to use similar materials to those that are being given at school.
I like to give the student an opportunity to try something out and explain to me what they are doing. If there are more expedient or correct methods then I will help them to find those, intervening and reshaping their thinking as and when necessary. Sometimes new skills or information might need to be taught directly. We would also need to find ways of remembering these things. Above all, it should be enjoyable.
