I don't believe in languages as mere tools to ask for an address, spell your name, or tell the flight attendant to re-fill your beverage. Of course, essential communication for travel or business is a must, but they're also vehicles into other cultures, mentalities, values, and ideas. Thus, the literary value in a language and the worldview(s) behind it are indispensable to actually learn it (and do it with enjoyment, which is key in order to persevere and progress in the learning process).
That is why I approach both Spanish and English through literature and art, cultural idiosyncrasies and facts beyond daily-life examples. If you are passionate about everything a language entails and want to go beyond the basics (not just in surviving in an airport or get your message across a business meeting, I'm your guy): unorthodox, yes, but rather fun.
