Five years as a Spanish Tutor at the Universidad Iberoamericana (each year a 10 students group).
The periods were from July to June next year. I realized many of them didn't want to learn the language. In the beginning it was difficult to me, but at the end of the period I was glad to enjoy their conversation in spanish.
One year teaching to North American workers living in Mexico. Technical Personnel had to stay in my country for months and somebody had to assist them.
I consider myself an analytical and patient person. I know how is to be in a country where almost nobody can help you translating.
I work with empathy towards the student because I like to be in touch with People.
If it is possible I interview the student before the first class. If not, I make questions in several sessions. Since I like people I will have the opportunity to be friendly, get some information and find out the best teaching methods to use according the different personalities.
I frequently practice a mix of:
Logical thinking by following their minds
Games and songs. Sometimes it helps a lot if they like music.
Easy projects. I propose a short and easy task.
Flipped class. A small homework to develop the theme at class and find connections with other subjects.
Practical cases. Just fill the blanks to finish the question.
Associations. Similarity on words takes you to many existing expressions.
Jokes. Having fun is basic on learning. A student said to my mother "Oh! estoy tan embarazada" (she meant Oh, I am so embarrassed) but in spanish she said "I am so pregnant".
