Within my lessons I usually like to target topics that my students are less confident in, through a clear and concise explanation, followed by guiding the student through practice questions. Within my explanations I aim to explain concepts in a very simple manner that all students can understand as I believe that overcomplicating topics is a major factor why students tend to struggle in STEM based subjects.
Often I may ask questions to the student throughout my explanation in order to engage them and make sure they fully comprehend the content being taught. I have found that students have been learning content much quicker with a greater understanding since I have implemented this strategy into my teaching.
Once a student is fairly confident on all the topics, we will mainly go through general past papers focusing on the tougher questions that will challenge them. This is because once a student has a well rounded understanding of the topics it is inefficient to go through questions that they can do with ease.
However on some occasions I may ask a student to complete a full practice paper (either in the lesson or outside as homework), in order to have a good idea of there overall ability and time management. It allows allows me to see if there are any types of questions that they struggle with.
In general, I try not to give students any homework as I understand that they will have other commitments , however sporadically i may ask them to complete some questions to consolidate their knowledge.
