Being a maths student at A-Level myself I know what methods are best for improving. I'd generally first go over the syllabus with the student and get an idea of what may be causing issues. From this point I would attempt to teach the problematic topic to a good level of understanding and then go over questions with them, as the repetition of questions is the best way to improve in maths. At the end of this I would typically provide an assessment to gauge the level of improvement and would repeat this simple yet effective method. The main bulk of the teaching would be attempting to explain the structure and process of past paper questions, as a deeper level of understanding is required to replicate results in the real exam.
