I also took Biology and Chemistry at A-Level, and currently study Biochemistry at university. I currently only do lessons online on Zoom.
I find these subjects quite interesting, and I have always found it helpful to use diagrams, mind-maps and step by step explanations when tutoring my previous students. I also go through exam questions with my students to make sure that they are well-prepared, firstly by going through one myself, then guiding my student through the next one, and then allowing my student to attempt one on their own, and repeating this process until the student feels confident.
Tutoring sessions with me are usually focused but not too intense, so that the student does not feel stressed out or unable to ask questions. Questions often help to streamline the teaching process and allow me to help the student improve in the areas they actually need to focus on, so they are very welcome.
I try to set some independent work at the end of each session that we can review quickly at the start of the next session. This allows the student to ask questions about anything they struggle with. I try to set a reasonable amount so that it does not clash with their school work/homework, but enough to make sure that they are engaging with the content and actively learning it.
