I like to teach using examples that I will go through and explain, so that my students can follow along each step in a topic and ask questions at any stage that they do not understand. I’ve found this to be effective, as it gives my students an understanding of the topic as well as teaching them how to apply said topic. However, I understand that each person does not learn the same way, and I’m flexible in altering my teaching to best suit the student and to guarantee the best results out of the sessions.
I will look to do hour long sessions, however they can be shortened or lengthened depending on the student’s needs and wishes. I believe that this length of time however is optimal for engaging the student and efficient learning, as it leaves time for getting up to speed at the start, and does not go on too long so that the student’s mind begins to wander elsewhere.
Typically, I format my lessons to have a short 5-min recap of the previous session at the start, before going over uncovered topics for the majority of the lesson. Then, I will leave 10 minutes towards the end for the student to ask me any questions on a topic that they feel they need extra help on, for instance something that they learned in school during the week but did not fully click with them yet. This allows for great synergy between the student’s school lessons and their tutoring sessions to help them perform at their best.
