It's important to identify their strengths and weaknesses by seeing things from their point of view and explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them. Building knowledge requires a foundation so teaching them step by step helps them gain confidence and keep up with the syllabus. Additionally, being supportive is essential to being a tutor, encouraging students when they feel disappointed about their performance helps maintain their enthusiasm for learning. Lastly, school marks should not be a scale to measure students' abilities; treat all students fairly and without bias. Therefore, during classes, I will provide examples to guide you step by step and provide practice and test papers to ensure students fully understand the topics.
I had the opportunity to teach Math to a Year 5 student in Hong Kong. This student typically scored a B in exams but aimed to achieve higher marks. I recognized that they had a solid foundation in Math but needed more practice with more challenging questions. To address this, I prepared exercises focusing on harder problems to strengthen their skills. Understanding that Math can sometimes be dull for younger students, I broke down complex concepts into simpler explanations to make learning more engaging and applicable to their tests.
