As someone who has experience of learning the language, I make a better tutor of the basics than native Japanese speakers - I can understand the specific difficulties English-speaking learners face, and can explain them in detail in the same native language as the student, which is much more important.
I tend to use as the bedrock of my lessons one of the textbook series 'Minna no Nihongo' and 'Japanese for Busy People', depending on whether the student wishes to learn written Japanese or just the spoken language. I can then add my own supplementary material to this as and when required, usually if there are any particular areas with which students might be struggling.
