With my students I begin with gauging where they stand with maths as a whole through general conversations and how proficiently they work through exam questions. Whether or not they enjoy it, their problem solving skills, comprehension of problems and topics, and their appreciation for maths. To me, these aspects to maths are some of the most important for a students proficiency to begin to soar, an appreciation for where their skills that they have learnt can take them and how maths is not just numbers but a general methodical way of thinking. I attempt to build upon these qualities by introducing a wider appreciation for subject and its real world applications; this would be done generally throughout our lessons together.
Throughout our lessons I would begin to note topics of interest that are perhaps weaker and stronger for the student and focus and improve areas of importance such as algebraic fractions and trigonometry and also their general study skills and confidence.
I aim to ultimately prepare my students for their exams and achieve the best they can but also their personal connection with maths and how they can use it to benefit them.
