The key concepts to understanding the basics of chemistry begin with atomic theory (what are atoms). Then we can tie in atomic theory with trends of the periodic table - as this relates to ionic bonding, chemical reactions, and states of matter; from there we can begin to understand what chemical reactions are.
Matter is the building blocks of our universe, and understanding it brings a deeper appreciation and understanding of life.
We can understand chemistry through using simple examples of adding salt to water to make a solutions, or boiling liquids to make a gas (steam). My experience as a science technician involves giving demonstrations to students often, and I am capable of making demonstrations using laboratory equipment.
Once we have the basics of matter covered, and how atoms bond to each other, we can begin to balance chemical equations so that we can find the concentration of an unknown solution. Understanding moles is a tricky concept, which often takes multiple explanations before students can grasp the concept and use it in calculations to find the concentration of solutions. From this point we build on our knowledge of solutions to cover more in depth topics such as titrations, neutralization reactions, and energy changes in chemical reactions.
I will be working through problems with students, and using real life examples wherever possible. My expertise is in hands-on practical applications of science, so I can also explain equipment and procedures that students encounter in their classroom practicals.
