I tutored for the Brilliant Club, which is aimed at teaching extra-curricular subjects to high achievers. I tutored the age group 11-13 for them. After this I undertook a Physics PGCE for secondary school, during both of which I gathered experience at both primary school level and SEN.
My main aim would be to help the student understand how to apply knowledge to problems with the goal being for them to take this ability to school and their exams. It is much more important to be able to understand a problem to the degree that you can apply it on completely different problems than just standard school test problems. This will mean you will find these tests easy to complete and will help with your confidence.
My lesson format will be split into 3 sections:
Start: 5-10 min review of last session, where the focus will be correcting errors from prior work done that I have already identified.
Main: This session will comprise either of work that the student has specifically requested to go through, or work that I feel is necessary based on prior experience with the student and their curriculum.
End: 5 min review of session; one area to improve on based on that session, and any questions that the student has.
Material used, will be a mixture of:
- Screen share (presentation slide),
- Interactive whiteboard,
Student will ideally need:
- Paper (notebook),
- Pen and pencil,
- Calculator.
...however, we will work with what have and find a way no matter what.
