I find the best way to help students understand Maths is by getting to know them and how I can put examples in the context of their lives. I’ve found this method works great in the classroom at school, in person tutoring and online, by working out how they don’t like to learn, what they believe may work for them and adding in some relevant ‘real life examples’, I’m able to help the students grasp concepts and confidence for themselves.
Beginning each session with an introduction, I ask them to tell me what it is they need help and why they believe they don’t understand, this then allows me to discuss with the students the topic and help together build a game plan. We often go back to basics ensuring they have grasped it at that level, before presenting more in-depth examples. I encourage talking allowed about why we’re doing certain working out and about where this relates back to in real life, as I’m a firm believer if you’re confident when you can teach a topic to someone else. As such the final few minutes will be spent with the student “teaching” the topic to me, to confirm where they have got to this session.
For GCSE prep I’m happy to cover topics as above, review and discuss past papers or set further examples to be discussed together.
I have experience of online and in-person tutoring, and in the classroom as a Cover Teacher for a Maths class - covering all ages and abilities from Year 7 to GCSE.
