I start of by using a mock papers to assess what subject areas are known, understood and mastered. I will also look at what the student has been assigned by the school to make sure that they are well prepared for their lessons.
I also use physical apparatus especially with shape because often it's harder Imagine when numbers and words are just written on paper. I also use practical examples that a pupil will have experienced for questions. This is all so the fundamental understanding is clear, from there it can be referred back to as we add more abstract and complex knowledge to the plan. Often I find students make mistakes when they have fully understood the task they have been set. This is why I use reassessment because a majority of the time it allows me to see where the mistakes are being made, me it the answer or understanding of the question.
I will go back regularly to assessments to evaluate what is learnt and what still needs work.
Working in schools has taught me that there are lots of different approaches to learning. Some people need multiple 20 minute sessions with 3-5 minute breaks in between. Some need repetition in different ways. Some need long concentrated sessions on one subject area.
My role is to work with the pupil to find a method that works effectively and makes it a positive experience. I have an adaptive and patient approach. I have collected resources and activities that not only work with maths but also science. In tutoring these subjects I also work with understanding the language of a question which is essential for all other subjects.
